The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has made a groundbreaking change in the diamond industry by officially recognizing lab-grown diamonds as real diamonds. No longer classified as "synthetic," these diamonds are now categorized as Cultured Diamonds, reflecting their true optical, physical, and chemical properties.

 

A Historic Change in Diamond Definition

Previously, the FTC defined a diamond as: “A natural mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system.” However, the latest update removes the term “natural,” acknowledging that lab-grown diamonds possess the same fundamental properties as mined diamonds.
The FTC stated: “When the commission first used this definition in 1956, there was only one type of diamond product on the market — natural stones mined from the earth. Since then, technological advances have made it possible to create diamonds in a laboratory. These stones have essentially the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as mined diamonds. Thus, they are diamonds.”

What Does This Mean for Jewelers and Retailers?

For jewelers and diamond sellers, this marks a new era. Now, lab-created diamonds can be marketed as real diamonds, with the only requirement being a clear disclosure that they are Cultured Diamonds. Meanwhile, diamonds extracted from the earth will be referred to as Mined Diamonds.
